Born February 4th, 1944. Degree in Economics from Università Bocconi. Diploma in Economic Planning, lnstitute of Social Studies, Den Haag. Graduate work at the Center for Development Planning, Erasmus University, Rotterdam (1970-72).
Full Professor of Economic Policy. Rector of Università Bocconi from 2000 to 2004. Director of ISLA Centre for Latin American Studies and Transitino Economies. He took a leave of absence from 1994 to 1999 for parliamentary term of office (Italian Senate and European Parliament). He was Vice-Rector of the University for issues regarding teaching and training (undergraduate and post-graduate programs) and international relations. He has been the degree director of the specialisation course in Economics of Tourism. He was vice-president of CEMS (1988-1993) and from 1990 to 1993 he was president of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI). He is vice-president of the Associazione Universitaria di Studi Europei (AUSE). He has conducted technical-scientific activities for public institutions and international organizations. He participates in the executive boards of technical-scientific foundations. He was a researcher at the Netherlands Economic Institute of Rotterdam (1970/72) and a visiting professor at Erasmus University of Rotterdam (1978), the HEC in Paris (1988-1990), the Wirtschaft Universität of Vienna (1991) and the Centre for European Studies of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok (1999). He has taught at the Universities of Milano, Sassari and Trento, where he directed the Department of Economics.
